Earlier this month, we brought you news of Jamie Gulliford – Head Chef at Salcombe Harbour Hotel – and his amazing/mad trekking challenge: 180 miles along the South West Coastal Path in 5 days.
Well, we have good news! At approximately 6pm on Friday 17th November, Jamie arrived back in Salcombe to a hero’s welcome and a well-earned drink! Here’s the story of one man’s adventure along the Jurassic Coast.
Hi Jamie, congratulations! How does it feel to have finished the walk?
“Amazing. I knew the journey was going to be hard and, even though it was challenging, it was a really enjoyable week. I was surprised at how far and how hard I was able to push myself.”
Well that’s good to hear! What were the main highlights of the walk?
“I really enjoyed the first morning walking along the beach, finally doing what had been planned for so many months and getting it started. The scenery is stunning…. I was amazed by the change in coast line as the days went on .. no day was the same terrain or scenery … the week will be one big memory for me as it is by far the biggest physical challenge I have ever undertaken”
And what about the tougher moments?
“The biggest challenge, without doubt, was Day 3. Multiple hills, steps, harsh terrain… it had it all! At one point I was between Lyme Regis and Seaton facing a sign that said beyond this point is hard, there is no other path and it will take you 3 – 4 hours to get through. Well, it was long and tough but I smashed through it in 2:30!”
Fantastic! Bet it felt pretty good arriving in Salcombe on Friday.
“It was a great feeling. I could literally feel myself picking up the speed and wanting to get back to see my friends and family. Once arrived at Salcombe Habour Hotel I had a lovely reception from them with a glass of champagne (replaced with a pint of beer!). It was great to see Adam from Room to Reward who had made it down to see me in and talk about the week.”
And finally, any special thank yous?
“I had such an amazing sponsor team and thank them all from the bottom of my heart. Without them I couldn’t have done it, or at least not as quickly! I’d like to say a particular thank you to:
- Christchurch, Sidmouth and Salcombe Harbour Hotels
- The Riviera Hotel in Weymouth
- The Bull Hotel in Bridport
- The Imperial Hotel in Torquay
- Marshall Audi in Plymouth
- BB Food Service
- AG Barr
- Rex Down
- Salcombe Brew
- Bays Brewery
Finally, I’d like to give a special shout out to my Dad, Kev Gulliford – the best support driver ever!”
As well as the above, Room to Reward would like to thank Jamie for his unbelievable effort which raised approx. £3,000 – thank you Jamie!
We put together a short video about Jamie’s walk here, enjoy!
