Lizzie – Army Benevolent Fund – Chewton Glen

Meet the Hidden Heroes

For Volunteers Week 2026, we are delighted to share Lizzie’s story with you. Lizzie is an inspirational volunteer with the Army Benevolent Fund, who R2R have partnered with for a number of years.

The Nomination:  Lizzie has been a steadfast and valued supporter of the Army Benevolent Fund for nearly two decades, consistently giving her time and energy to support the charity’s work.
A familiar and trusted presence within the London Region, Lizzie contributes across a number of initiatives, from assisting at fundraising events to supporting seasonal campaigns.
Quietly dedicated and always dependable, Lizzie’s contribution is not only measured in the funds she helps raise, but in the time, care and consistency she brings year after year. She represents the very best of volunteer support and is thoroughly deserving of this recognition.

Lizzie began supporting the Army Benevolent Fund in 2006 and has remained a committed and active volunteer ever since. Her involvement spans a variety of activities, reflecting both her flexibility and her enthusiasm for supporting the Army family. In the lead-up to Christmas each year, Lizzie volunteers regularly at the ‘Cards for Good Causes’ shop in Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square, where she helps raise funds while engaging with the local community. Her friendly presence and reliability make her an integral part of the team.
Lizzie also dedicates a significant amount of time to the Chelsea Flower Show collection, one of ABF’s key fundraising moments. Working long days throughout the week, she supports the vital task of processing donations, helping ensure that substantial funds are accurately handled and recorded.
In addition, she takes part in the Army Carol Service and offers her time afterwards to assist with counting donations, continuing her support behind the scenes.
Lizzie’s connection to the charity is longstanding, and she continues her involvement following the passing of her husband, who was also a supporter. Living on her own, she remains deeply committed to giving back.
Through her consistent and selfless contribution, Lizzie has made a meaningful and lasting impact, helping the Army Benevolent Fund continue its support for soldiers, veterans and their families.

Lizzie enjoyed a well-deserved stay at Chewton Glen in Hampshire, where she was accompanied by her niece, Emma, who has also volunteered for ABF, including supporting collections at the Chelsea Flower Show. Set on the edge of the New Forest and close to the coast, the hotel offered a relaxing and memorable break, with access to a spa, a range of dining options, and scenic walks along the nearby beach.
Lizzie says: “It was an amazing treat, a fabulous hotel, and the staff were all so kind and welcoming. There was a wonderful spa, a choice of restaurants and great walks along the beach.
“I felt embarrassed to have received this Room to Reward as I feel there are so many other volunteers who are more deserving. However, it was a very nice surprise, and I am very grateful to have been chosen. Room to Reward is such a wonderful way to thank volunteers and all the hotels who participate in this scheme are to be thanked.”

Chewton Glen is part of the wonderful Iconic Luxury Hotels, who have been amazing R2R supporters from our very early days.
